School Health Indicators

Education

The number of primary school age children is taken from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Data Centre (latest available year).  Where available, either the number of students enrolled in primary school or the number of out-of-school children of primary age is given.  The gender parity index for gross enrolment ratio signifies the ratio of girls to boys, given at the primary level.  A value of 1 indicates gender parity, while a value less than 1 indicates more boys than girls, and a value greater than 1, more girls than boys.

HIV

The UNAIDS 2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic estimates the number of people living with HIV in 2007.  Figures for the number of children (0-14) and for the rate of HIV among young women and young men (15-24) are cited here, where available.

Orphans and vulnerable children

The number of children living in 2007 who have lost one or both parents due to all causes is reported in UNICEF's Children and AIDS: Third Stocktaking Report, 2008.  The number of children living in 2007 who have lost one or both parents due to AIDS is from the UNAIDS 2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic.

Malaria

The estimated number of malaria cases in 2006, along with the total population, is taken from the WHO World malaria report 2008.  Where available, the number of malaria cases for children under five is also given.  Any relevant journal articles on malaria in school-age children are sourced as well.

Worms

The prevalence rates of soil-transmitted helminths are from general population data reported by de Silva et al. 2003.  Any journal articles reporting prevalences in school-age children are cited as well.

Water and sanitation

UNICEF and WHO report drinking water and sanitation coverage for 2006 in their 2008 publication Progress on Drinking Water and Sanitation: Special Focus on Sanitation.  The status of water and sanitation in schools is most often reflected in situation analyses, which are discussed below.

Nutrition

UNICEF's State of the World's Children 2009 gives the percentage of children under five suffering from underweight, wasting, and stunting (moderate and severe) for the latest available year 2000 to 2007.  This preschool age information is supplemented with school-age population data on nutrition where available.

Situation analyses, national policies, and programmes

Where country-level situation analyses on school-based health and nutrition have been conducted, these documents are provided, along with any relevant national policies.  Details on the scope and substance of programmes in country are given as well.
